The Musica Genera Festival programme has always been related to experimental and contemporary music traditions, considering the last 50 years of sound artists' explorations as the rich source of inspiration and reference.

Around 20 different concerts and events will take place during the Festival, with about 20 artists from all over the world participating. The key to the 2007 edition variety of media and styles. Strictly acoustic performances will contrast with appearance by artists using exclusively computers and electronic devices, and also those who work mainly with visuals.

The programme refers to classics of the experimental genre, who have defined aesthetical tendencies with their work. Without a doubt, German percussionist Paul Lovens belongs to circle of classic musicians. His style became a landmark of European improvised music and free jazz. With his unique, charismatic virtuosity, he is one of the most important artists of the genre in the world. The work of Swiss sound artist Dave Phillips has a totally different character. For over 20 years he has been pushing the limits of music and sound performance, only to become one of the most uncompromising artists of the noise scene.
Japanese guitarist and sound manipulator Toshimaru Nakamura has earned his place in history of contemporary electronic music experiments, establishing the no input mixing board technique (utilization of mixing desk feedback as source for musical material) as one of common directions in aural explorations.
The diversity of programme is complemented by Ivan Pavlov, known better as COH, whose music is in some aspects related to electronic minimalism or even techno. However, his advanced compositional techniques and sound make him an original musical phenomenon.

The distinction of those four artists does not mean that others are there just to supplement the programme. MGF promoters spend the bulk of their time and energy in sourcing out and inviting some of the most interesting artists in the world.

During MGF 2007 the audience will have a chance to encounter the output of tuba player Robin Hayward, audio-visual projects of flautist Angelica Castello and Billy Roisz, who utilizes video feedback and synthesis in image creation, guitar-laptop noise mastery of Lasse Marhaug, para-theatrical and always astonishing actions of Goodiepal, electro-acoustic improvisations of Will Guthrie, Tomas Korber, Boris Hauf, the piano mastery of Anthony Pateras, computer programming of Robina Fox and retro-turntablism of Claus van Bebber.
The presentation of sound installation "Uninhabitable spaces v.2.0" by Jerome Noetinger and Lionel Marchetti, which is part of Szczecin's modern art collection, will serve as an essential accompaniment to the festival.

Musica Genera Festival is one of the most unique cultural events in Poland, often being described by media as one of the most important in Europe or even the world (Gazeta Wyborcza). The long-term activity of Musica Genera label in the field of concert organization (not only in Szczecin but throughout Poland and in many European countries) as well as the festival's record publishing arm (having already released 14 CDs by many of the world's most acclaimed personalities in this genre) have contributed to establishing a faithful and growing audience for experimental music in Poland.

The idea of the festival from the very beginning focused on promoting non-commercial, artistic music, defining the contemporary musical culture. The festival came into being without any institutional support. The organizers had a long-term vision and with their own energy and work have brought the festival to life from scratch. They created cultural value, which in just few years became a symbol of a certain musical aesthetic. Today's improvised music is an effect of confrontation of academic contemporary music with jazz. Over the last 40 years, it has established its own aesthetics, direction and tradition. Musica Genera Festival in its early stage was based on presentation of improvised music, which was highly underdeveloped in Poland as compared to other European countries and North America. Being a completely new and focused aesthetical proposition, the festival quickly earned its great reputation along with a faithful audience.
The background and programme of the festival evolved with successive editions. Improvised music was still one of the mainstays of the event, but gradually it was supplemented with phenomena from the broader spectrum of contemporary experimental music as well as visual arts.
Over 100 artists from all over the world have participated in the festival since its inception.

The festival takes place in several venues and urban spaces. Kana Theatre is the festival center and most of the performances based on exclusive, event-specific collaborations of invited artists take place there. There is also the festival club, where artists and audience spend time between events on discussions of shared experiences. Records and publications can be purchased in the accompanying shop.
Castle Opera is another important festival spot, hosting some of the more important events from the programme. The third most crucial space for performances is the post-industrial areas of former city slaughterhouse on Lasztownia island. These amazing spaces have been rediscovered for the citizens and festival audience by the organizers. For the last three editions, the rooms of the National Museum (with their gallery character, perfect for exposition of audiovisual installations, lectures and discussions) have become another festival space. This year, one of the festival events will take place on the National Museum's courtyard. The parking lot of the Voivodeship Police Department, which will host the audiovisual spectacle by Edwin van der Heide, will make up another new space.

Festival events will begin on Friday, May 25th and finish late on the night of Sunday, May 27th.
